Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun (1755–1842)  Marie-Antoinette in a Muslin dress  (1783)  The portrait caused a scandal when it was exhibited at the Salon de Paris. The fact that the queen of France dressed as a maid provoked indignant reactions. Some argued she was conspiring with her brother to ruin the markets of Lyon silk manufacturers and  linen in Brussels.
