Toilet Service
Manufacture de Sèvres
1763
Soft-paste porcelain, painted and gilded
Vincennes and Sèvres toilet wares were used for the cosmetics and hair preparations during the ritual of the toilette. In the 18th century this was undertaken before courtiers, friends and tradesmen. This service (probably incomplete) comprises two powder boxes, two patch boxes, a small brush (vergette) for brushing away wig powder and a clothes brush. The service may have been intended for Madame de Pompadour, but was left incomplete on her death in 1764, subsequently being sold to Queen Lovisa Ulrika of Sweden (1720 - 82).
