The Luck of Barry Lyndon by Thackeray, was published in 1844 and based on the life and exploits of the Anglo-Irish Andrew Robinson Stoney. Stanley Kubrick adapted Thackeray’s novel, making Barry Lyndon.
Kubrick used only candles to light his movie in order to achieve that old world feeling.

From Barry Lyndon, by Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick was inspired by the oil paintings and watercolors depicting 18th century European pastoral and courtly life, especially those of Gainsborough and Boucher. Many of his scenes are purposefully composed as would a period landscape painting.
